How do you define the divine?
I am not going to address this in the usual way, because this is a hard question, and cannot be left to simple answers. This will be an expression of my thoughts, feelings and emotions, and may be jumbled, tangled and intertwined with other things, words and sentences. It may not make much sense…but then again, can a definition of the divine, anyone’s definition of the divine, ever make complete sense to another?
In simple sentences the Divine is that which is greater than the sum of its parts. It is that higher being, thing, cosmic force or reality that pervades all of existence. It is God, it is Goddess, it is Deity.
“You are Earth, Sky and Sea
lady of bone, blood and compassion”
Divine is that which we turn to when our lives are falling apart. Divine is that which we feel when the tears are dripping down from our face, in fact those very tears, with their warm wetness, are Divine in and of themselves.
“We are the same as plants, as trees, as other people, as the rain that falls. We consist of that which is around us. We are the same as everything”
Divine is the air that we breathe in, it is the night sky and the stars. Divine is the way in which we talk, walk and act, so every thought, word and deed should be mindful.
“The touch of the infinite mystery passes over the trivial and the familiar, making it break out into ineffable music…the trees, the stars, and the blue hills ache with a meaning which can never be uttered in words”
Divine is the connection between you and me, it is the connection between him/her/hir. Divine is the space between people, that very tangible space between meeting and greeting another. Divine is the thread of connection and rope of recognition.
Divine is symbolic, archetypal, individual and personal.
Divine is an act of creation and recreation, becoming and unbecoming.
Divine is spiritual, sexual, emotional and mental union with another.
“It is time we saw sex as the truly sacred act that it is. A deep meditation, a holy communion and a dance with the force of creation”
– Marcus Allen
Divine is the spark of inspiration, it is what tears down and renews. It is nature, it is power, it is love.
Divine is the full spectrum of experience; pain, anger, sadness, elation, joy, laughter.
“Love is not really the experience of beauty and romantic joy alone. Love is associated with ugliness and pain and aggression as well as with the beauty of the world; it is not the re-creation of heaven. Love and compassion, the open path, is associated with “what is.” In order to develop love-universal love, cosmic love, whatever you would like to call it – one must accept the whole situation of life as it is, both the light and the dark, the good and the bad. One must open oneself to life, communicate with it.”
– Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche
Look into the eyes of an animal and you are looking into the eyes of “God”. Look into the eyes of someone who loves you and you are seeing “God”.
The Divine is tangible and intangible, you can taste, touch and kiss it with your very being, you can see it in the redness of a rose, or the blueness of the ocean.
“When you look for me in the Empty Places. When you be, I am there, ever-becoming, ever taking fresh forms”
The Divine is transformation, it is an unfolding of the Self, of the Universe, of Others. It is forever and eternity, it is timeless, spaceless and formless.
When one see’s eternity in things that pass away, and infinity in finite things, then one has pure knowledge”
-The Bhagavad Gita
The Divine is within every being, every deity, every speck of dust. The Divine is a cosmic dance in which we all take part, from life to death and life again.
